I took a class called Death in American history in college, and we read a different Philip Aries book. I think I’d get more out of the class now, but even at the time, it was interesting to see the differences in how Americans viewed death based on their historical time period.
You may enjoy the book A Hole in the World by Amanda Held Opelt. Each chapter explores a different grief ritual while she also processes the loss of her sister and several miscarriages. It is from a Christian lens, but doesn't feel preachy (at least from my memory of it).

Ohh I want to take that class!

Thanks, Kelly! I've seen that title several times, but I thought it might be overly preachy so skipped it. I'll have to check it out.
