You have really put words to a tension I was feeling but couldn’t name—the whiplash between 2016’s “because you have privilege you must pay attention” and 2024/5’s “you don’t have to pay attention if it’s too much.”
Soo glad I'm not the only one that was feeling whiplashy!
Embarrasingly, this time around, I was a little bit like, but wait who's right? When I realized, duh, I'm a grown up adult and responsible for my own decisions.
I've been wrestling with all this too. Appreciate your honesty about what things have felt fruitful or fruitless. Joining you in the insurrectionary act of seeking joy...
Sara, we are in a similar season of life and I second that my biggest takeaway of late is to be a better listener to myself and others and lean into what I love. Thank you for your honest reflection here.
My usual (however unhealthy) anxiety coping method is to gather all the information I can. In this case, that’s definitely not serving me well.
I saw the Cillian Murphy movie Small Things Like These right after the election, and I’m still thinking about it months later. Without giving anything away, I think its complexity speaks to this moment.
Thomas (below) mentioned joy, and that is what I use social media - IG - for in my life. I follow accounts that share beauty, laughter, encouragement. IG is a positive in my life and I follow accounts that keep it that way. It is a rich resource of good things for me.
Our joy is our superpower. Wield it well.
Love it - and think we should make tshirts for that tagline too! Thanks for reading Thomas ❤️

I feel like I need “insurrectionary act of seeking joy” on a tshirt. Thanks for reading and wrestling with me, Liz!

Thank you for the solidarity, Mary ❤️

That’s one of my usual coping mechanisms too, and it is similarly not working for me these days.
I keep hearing about that movie - I’ll watch!
Thanks for reading, Annette ❤️
